My Story

From a young age growing up in a small village in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, I knew I wanted to be a scientist but had never heard the word uttered. I was always extremely inquisitive and was never fully satisfied with the answers to my questions, and I knew there had to be a way to find answers. I found that path when I was introduced to the word "scientist" after moving to NYC at the age of 8. I knew that was going to be an integral part to my future, but more importantly, my purpose. It was not a path without tests, though, and after enduring (and surviving) group home life and teenage motherhood, I doubted whether I would ever become a scientist. But one day I just DECIDED that I could not live my life without making the attempt. I walked into John Jay College of Criminal Justice and enrolled in the Forensic Science program. My life has not been the same since! Upon graduating with my degree as a Forensic Toxicologist, I started working at Columbia University managing a lab and doing research for clinical trials in the Cardiology department, where I got my first taste of what it means to be an author in scientific publications.

I moved on to create my first company (Xanthines All Natural Products) where I was able to use my unique science background to formulate safe alternatives to personal care products. Xanthines Cafe was my next project where I connect Black and Brown children to the wonderful and magical world of science.

Science is in everything I do. The way I talk. The way I analyze. The way I approach any obstacle. However, I also have an equally strong holistic side. Growing up, I learned there was an herb/plant for everything. Later on in life when I went blind due to a rare eye condition (polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy), it was Dr Sebi's wisdom plus the herbs/plants he gave me that ultimately healed my vision when science told me I would be blind for life. I have a deep respect for both science and nature, as one does not exist without the other. My life mission is to bridge the growing gap between the science disciplines and holistic practices in ways that promote health and wellness for underserved communities.

Once I got into space, I was feeling very comfortable in the universe. I felt like I had a right to be anywhere in this universe, that I belonged here as much as any speck of stardust, any comet, any planet"

Sis I'm Tired Podcast

Co-Host

The "Sis, I'm Tired" podcast was manifested by Nyeesha D Williams and Tamykah Anthony to provide a space to amplify those feelings that women do not have enough spaces to express because let's face it, every woman can finish that phrase: "Sis I'm Tired of...". In each episode, Nyeesha and Tamykah will finish the phrase and explore the experiences, perspectives, hard truths, that get us to the "tired" point and provide a support system. Each episode will also feature "woman-owned" and/or "woman-centered" businesses that provide services or products for the health and "whole"ness of the Sistas!

Between the Reads:
Beyond the Stereotype with Tamykah Anthony

"Audra Russell chats with forensic toxicologist, entrepreneur, and author Tamykah Anthony. Tamykah Anthony is a passionate and award winning Forensic Toxicologist with a deep love for the community. She is also an entrepreneur and educator. She serves as a mentor, role model, and an inspiration to children and women, specifically those in the Brooklyn community where she grew up.  Her book, Diary of a MisEducated Baby Mama, is a raw autobiographical poetic memoir that is unapologetically honest about the unspoken realities of being a single mother. We get raw and real as we talk about the soul-stirring poems in her book, Diary of a Miseducated Baby Mama."
